We Miss You Joe Ranft
I saw this several years ago at Joe Ranft‘s memorial at Pixar after his tragic and early death. Joe was not only an amazing artist and storyteller, he left a legacy of generosity and, as I saw first hand at his memorial, his life touch so many people. He is credited by many of pioneering the Pixar culture that is so unique today.
I only met Joe once (well, actually twice—on the same day) and I dreamed of one day working with him. I’ll never forget his passion and gentle, almost childlike, sense of humor. This film, done in story sketch, was a tribute to Joe by his friend, animation director, John Musker. It’s great to see it again and it still brings a tear to my eyes!
Today would have been Joe’s 50th birthday.

…wow…
I just noticed this post. Joe was my story teacher at Calarts for my Freshman year (87-88). He was, of course, wonderful and intruduced me to the art of Bill Peet. I really struggled that year (well, every year) and Joe was extremely kind and very encouraging. He was an important person at a developmental time in my life and I will forever be thankful for him.
Needless to say, I still get very sad thinking about how we lost him. I didn’t know he was born on March 13th. That was my father’s birthday.
man, this video made me cry and i barely know of this man. I wish i could have met him though. May he rest in piece knowing that people will always remember him.
