Frank Zappa explains the decline of…almost everything?

My friend David Nethery shared the link to this video with me recently and I found it very intriguing. Posted also on Cartoon Brew, where, as usual, sparked a heated debate.
As you watch the first 2:08 minutes, substitute the word “music’ with “comic strips”, “comic books”, “animation”, “film” or your media of choice. Makes ya think.

Yes, just take out the words “music” or “music industry” and substitute “animation” and it speaks to the difficulty of getting anything new or unusual approved into production. Very similar to some points Brad Bird makes in his famous McKinsey Quarterly profile from a few years ago:

BTW, I think it applies to more than just music and animation (as my post implies). The comic strip, comic book AND film industry also suffer from this mentality which is essentially the decision making process of the “creative executives.” Leave the creative decisions to the real creatives.
