We’ve gotten a few questions as to why the comments have been shut off on the Red’s Planet blog. Well, in a nutshell, since Red’s Planet is now designated a children’s book, the website falls under rules set forth by COPPA, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, which regulates the online personal information that can be obtained from children under 13 without parental permission.
In the past, to be able to assure that comments were screened for spam and language, this site was originally set up to ask for an email address for verification and approval. However, under COPPA, an email address is one of many things considered to be a personal identifier. To be honest, COPPA is so difficult to understand and legal advice so expensive, it’s just easier to suspended comments than risk being noncompliant.
